What is modernism? Modernism is a philosophical movement, which first emerged in the early twentieth century, it means current or
present. Modernists believe that ornament should follow the
structure and the purpose of the building. Modernism is also described
as being a break with tradition, and as typifying
everything that rejects the inheritance of the past. Paul Greenhalgh outlined key features in modernist design including function, progress,
anti-historicism and social morality.
Modernist architecture by allowing a great deal
of repetition of elements without variation, buildings could reflect
modern technology. Modernity is constantly in conflict with
tradition, intends
that we
should move into a brand new world.
